How camouflage evolved into today's OCP:
1898: During the Spanish-American War, American troops in blue coats were easy targets. To hide themselves, they used a quick and effective technique: they coated their uniforms with mud to blend in with their surroundings.
Camouflage was first developed in France by artists who tried to disguise military equipment with patterns.
1902: The U.S. Army adopts brown khaki summer uniforms and winter camouflage olive uniforms. These replaced the blue uniforms that became army uniforms.
World War I: With the rise of aerial photography, machine guns and trench warfare in World War I, the use of camouflage became more important. As a result, the U.S. Army had its first camouflage unit. These impressive artists, known as Camofleurs, began designing camouflage tactics and patterns. World War I camouflage mainly appeared on guns and vehicles.
